How to build a Wind turbine from recycled parts

When I pick up a Home Power Magazine, or a Backwoods Home, or a Mother Earth News. I read the letters to the editor and I think, These are my people! This is my tribe—the tribe of folks striving for independence of thought and lifestyle, who are creative in their choice of building materials, who try to make responsible choices about how their choices affect the environment they live in.

While writing this article I put a lot of thought into getting the information to the people. Well here goes  :^D . A list of important things to know and remember.

  • All motors are generators ie electrical motors, not engines.
  • If the motor is a DC motor, it will produce AC electricity if it is used as a generator.
  • Generators function better if you don’t have to create the magnetic field ie they need magnets in them to perform best.
  • A moving magnetic field near or through a coil of wire creates a voltage and current that is AC, The stronger the field the higher the voltage and current, also the more turns of the coil increases the voltage.
  • AC electricity can easily be converted to DC to charge Batteries with a Bridge rectifier.

  1. recycled DC motor from treadmill or other appliance (DC motors have magnets in them already)
  2. 24 inch of plastic pipe schedule 80  / 8 inch pipe, you should get 6 blades out of.
  3. 24 inch alum. square tube
  4. 8×12 piece of tin for tail fin to guide into wind
  5. length of pipe to mount the wind turbine on
  6. pipe clamps
  7. a union for a swivel
  8. a bridge rectifier
  9. copper wire
  10. a 12 volt battery (or multiple batteries in a bank)

Wimshurst generator in action

In a Wimshurst machine, the two insulated discs and their metal sectors rotate in opposite directions passing the crossed metal neutralizer bars and their brushes. An imbalance of charges is induced, amplified, and collected by two pairs of metal combs with points placed near the surfaces of each disk. These collectors are mounted on insulating supports and connected to the output terminals. The positive feedback increases the accumulating charges exponentially until the dielectric breakdown voltage of the air is reached and an electric spark jumps across the gap.

This can be the power source for a tesla coil and be utilized to transmit wireless energy.

Demonstration of a dissectible capacitor or dissectible Leyden jar and an explanation of how it works. I charge it up to a high voltage using a Wimshurst machine and then take it apart. When I do, the voltage on the plates rises and, through ionization, charge moves from the plates to the dielectric container. This leaves the plates mostly discharged. I can even touch the plates together, to prove they’re discharged. When I reassemble the capacitor/Leyden jar, the charge is still on the dielectric and so I get a spark.


DIY wind turbine beats solar on price

You may have heard of William Kamkwamba, the Malawian teenager who built a wind turbine out of spare bicycle parts and scrap metal and wood. His turbine provided electricity in his home for the first time and allowed them to replace smelly, expensive kerosene lamps

In 2001 his family couldn’t afford the cost to send him to school, but he didn’t let that stop him from teaching himself the basics of electrical engineering out of an old school book and building a wind turbine that powered four lights, two radios, and a cell phone charger. He built his own homemade light switches and circuit breakers and has dabbled in radio transmitters.

Mr. Kamkwamba’s story became well known in 2006 after the internet news mob picked up on the story from a british daily. He was invited to present at TED 2007 and has smartly leveraged his fame to secure funding for 100% of his education. He is currently studying engineering.

Though 22 year old Oklahoman Kevin Harris might not have come from as humble roots as Mr. Kamkwamba, he shares his passion for green DIY hackery. Mr. Harris put together an extremely thorough how-to article on building a $150 wind generator on his website.

His turbine produces 50-250 watts, which makes puts its $150 price tag drastically cheaper than solar panels of the same output, even when you factor in the time needed to assemble it; 150 watt solar panels can cost in the neighborhood of $500 – $1,000.

Building Wind Turbine Blades

How to build wind turbine blades out of 6″ PVC pipe. If done correctly a 4 foot piece of 6″ PVC pipe will create 3 blades.Depending on the angle desired you can drop the tip of the blade toward the center of the PVC more. tools needed

Table saw, Side Grinder, wood screws, Electrical tape, drill, one 4 foot of 6″ pipe.



Home Made Wind Turbine

Want to build a wind turbine for your home? I have gathered several PDFs for those who want to build there own wind Hybrid Bladesturbines and have links to them at the bottom of this post. They cover all types of wind turbines and issues that you may run in to such as wind speeds and noise. From reading these my self I have found that the Hi-VAWT takes all into consideration and is easy to replicate.

These are a bit harder to replicate but look real cool.

Super Capacitors Replace Car Battery

The technology is here to do away with the lead acid battery. In this video lasersaber has replaced his car battery with an array of super capacitors andsupercapacitor runs a few tests. The uses could be limitless. The original PicoTurbine Educational Windmill kit is a great way to learn about renewable energyimages
technology. It produces just enough power to light up a small lamp or LED (about 2 volts at 25 milliamps).While it makes for a very cost effective educational experiment, many people have asked for a larger version that is weatherproof and actually produces enough power to be useful. PicoTurbine Deluxe is the answer to this request! While it only costs about three times as much as the little PicoTurbine kit, it is weatherproof and produces about 30 to 50 times as much power as the small version. In fact, the power produced is sufficient to charge NiCad batteries, or with alternative wiring could even provide a 12 volt battery bank a small trickle charge in a good stiff wind.

Using a Car Alternator to Generate Lots of Energy

Car alternators are great for charging the batteries in cars, but not so good outside the car. The reason for this is in a normal car-altgenerator you would have a permanent magnet or several permanent magnets in the armature. The coils of wire collect the magnetic field and turn that into electricity. Car alternators are designed with electro magnets and need voltage from the battery to start to generate electricity. the car engineers have done this so they can turn on the alternator when they need to and off again when the battery is charged and to prevent overcharging the battery. Here are a few videos on how to convert a car alternator so that it can be used in a wind turbine. Installing a strong Neodymium magnet will give a lot more flexibility in power generation.
